Megaways is the most influential slot mechanic of the last decade. Created by Big Time Gaming and licensed to studios including Pragmatic Play and BGaming, it replaces fixed paylines with a variable reel system that can generate up to 200,704 ways to win on a single spin. Cascading wins, growing free spin multipliers, and massive max wins are the hallmarks of every great Megaways game.
We have reviewed every Megaways slot below in full — base game mechanics, free spins, max win potential, and RTP. All 11 games on this page have free demo versions you can play without registration.

Megaways is a patented slot mechanic invented by Australian studio Big Time Gaming (BTG), first appearing in Dragon Born in 2016 and popularised by Bonanza the same year. The core idea is simple but radical: instead of fixed rows on each reel, the number of symbols displayed per reel changes randomly on every single spin — typically between 2 and 7.
On a standard 6-reel Megaways slot, if every reel shows 7 symbols simultaneously, the game generates 7×7×7×7×7×7 = 117,649 ways to win. On a 6-reel game that also includes a horizontal reel above reels 2–5 (as Bonanza does), the count can reach 117,649 ways base and higher in boosted states. Some titles from Pragmatic Play, using an expanded reel system, push this to 200,704 ways.
Ways-to-win replaces traditional paylines entirely — you win whenever matching symbols land on consecutive reels from left to right, regardless of position on the reel. More ways means more chances for every spin to connect, which is why Megaways games can feel both volatile and exciting at the same time.
Almost every Megaways game pairs the variable reel mechanic with a cascade feature — also called tumble, avalanche, or reaction depending on the studio. When a winning combination lands, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall down to replace them. If the replacement symbols form another win, the process repeats. A single spin can produce multiple consecutive wins, each adding to the total payout for that spin.
Cascades are particularly powerful in free spins, where most Megaways games layer a growing multiplier on top: each cascade during free spins increments a multiplier by 1 (or more), and that multiplier applies to all subsequent wins in the same round. A long cascade chain with a high multiplier is the main path to the large wins Megaways titles are known for.
Every slot on this list has a full review on SlotArk. Our ranking considers four factors in order of weight:
The free spins round is where Megaways games deliver their max win potential. We evaluate how quickly the multiplier grows, whether retriggers are possible, and whether the mechanic during free spins is genuinely different from base game play. A Megaways slot with weak free spins is not worth recommending regardless of other stats.
Curse of the Werewolf Megaways leads this list with a 40,976x max win — the highest on any Megaways slot we have reviewed. White Rabbit and Dog House Megaways follow at 13,366x and 12,305x respectively. High max win potential does not guarantee large wins, but it defines the ceiling of what is possible in a given session.
White Rabbit (97.39%) and Magic Mummy Megaways (97%) lead on theoretical return. Most Pragmatic Play Megaways titles sit between 96.49% and 96.55%, which is above the industry average. Always check whether your casino is running a reduced-RTP version — some operators configure lower RTP variants by default.
The Megaways licence has been applied to hundreds of slots, and quality varies significantly. Bonanza by BTG — the original — remains one of the best-designed Megaways games ever made. The Dog House Megaways adds sticky wilds and multiplier wilds on top of the cascade system. We rank slots where the Megaways implementation genuinely improves the game, not titles that use it as a marketing badge.
BTG invented Megaways and licences the mechanic to other studios. Most of the high-volume Megaways output today comes from Pragmatic Play, which has built a large library of Megaways titles including The Dog House Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways, and Curse of the Werewolf Megaways.
There are meaningful differences between BTG originals and PP licensed games. BTG titles like Bonanza and White Rabbit tend to have higher RTPs (96%–97%+) and more distinctive base-game mechanics. White Rabbit, for example, uses a feature unique to BTG: caterpillar wilds that expand the reel height during the base game, building toward the free spins with growing potential.
Pragmatic Play Megaways titles are generally more uniform: 6 reels, up to 117,649 or 200,704 ways, a horizontal reel above reels 2–5, cascading wins, and a free spins multiplier that grows by 1 per cascade with a minimum start multiplier. The formula is proven and widely played. The differences are in theme, volatility calibration, and max win cap.
BGaming also holds a Megaways licence, as seen in Magic Mummy Megaways, which delivers a 97% RTP — among the highest on this list — with up to 200,704 ways to win.
